How to Detect Counterfeit Dollars: Key Security Details to Verify Bills
As millions of dollar bills change hands every day in various markets, the chances of receiving a counterfeit note also increase. In Argentina, where the U.S. dollar plays a central role in savings and trading operations, knowing the security measures can prevent financial losses.
Counterfeiting techniques have evolved over time, and some copies can appear convincing at first glance. However, authentic bills retain physical and visual characteristics that remain difficult to reproduce accurately.
For this reason, the Federal Reserve of the United States recommends a simple check known as the TIM method, a sequence of three actions that allows you to review the main security elements without the need for special equipment.
Step by Step: What the TIM Method Is About
The name comes from the initials of Touch, Incline, and Look. The idea is to check the bill in that order to detect possible inconsistencies. Although no single check guarantees 100% authenticity, combining these controls offers a much more reliable assessment.
Touch
The first step is to pay attention to the texture of the paper. Genuine dollars are made from a blend of cotton and linen, which creates a slightly rough feel to the touch, very different from conventional paper.
On the newer design $100 bills, you can also feel raised printing, especially on the shoulder of the portrait of Benjamin Franklin and in some inscriptions. If the paper feels too smooth, slippery, excessively rigid, or very thin, it is advisable to be suspicious and perform other checks before accepting the bill.
Incline
The second step focuses on observing how certain elements react when the bill is moved under light. On modern notes, the number 100 located in the lower right corner changes color between copper and green due to optical variable ink.
Additionally, the well-known three-dimensional blue ribbon, woven into the paper and not glued on the surface, shows bells and the number "100" that seem to move when the bill is tilted. Another characteristic detail is the bell inside the inkwell, which also changes its appearance depending on the angle from which it is viewed. These effects are very difficult to imitate with common printing.
Look
The final check involves holding the bill up to the light. When doing so, a watermark featuring the portrait of Benjamin Franklin should appear, visible from both sides of the bill. The security thread embedded vertically should also be observed, which repeatedly includes the inscription "USA" alongside the number "100".
In a more detailed review, microprinting can also be found distributed in various areas of the design. Although they are difficult to distinguish without magnification, they represent another barrier against counterfeiting.
How to Detect Counterfeit Dollars with Small Faces or Old Bills
The so-called small face dollars, issued before the redesign in 1996, and other older series remain legal tender in the United States. However, they lack some of the security features incorporated in the more modern versions, requiring a different review.
On these bills, there is no 3D blue ribbon or bell inside the inkwell, so authenticity must be verified by paying special attention to the print quality, the watermark, the security thread, the texture of the paper, and the sharpness of the graphic details.
It is also advisable to compare the note with another whose authenticity is known. Differences in color, portrait definition, margins, paper thickness, or alignment of elements are often warning signs.
