Decrypted Operation Target Claims He Shared Bitcoin Wallet Password with Third Parties and Was Wrongfully Arrested After Exchange Breach

Brazilian justice is reviewing the request for freedom from one of the suspects detained in Operation Decrypted, and a recent decision published on Friday (17) highlights the background of the arrest linked to million-dollar cryptocurrency thefts at a U.S. exchange, a crime committed by Brazilians.

The case is being processed in higher courts in response to the preventive detention of Ronison. His defense argues that there are technical flaws in the accusation involving irregular bitcoin transfers.

Authorities arrested the suspect due to a suspicious movement of 44 bitcoins in August 2025. This transfer occurred after a court order prohibited access to online trading platforms.

The lawyers claim that the master password of the digital wallet was previously shared with other individuals outside the investigation.

The defense argues that this sharing of the password prevents exclusive blame from being placed on the suspect.

"It asserts that the investigation itself acknowledged the sharing of the seed phrase (master password) of the digital wallet with third parties, a circumstance that would prevent exclusive attribution of the transaction to the appellant," states the defense in the STJ.

The appeal reinforces the lack of individual evidence regarding the actual author of the electronic transfers on the network.

The central argument classifies the police suspicion as a mere technological possibility without guarantees.

The appeal also questions the violation of the rule regarding the blocking of trading on major global exchanges, as the suspect used the Exodus app to store cryptocurrencies in self-custody.

The defense views the self-custody system as a neutral factor outside the restrictions stipulated in the justice process.

"It argues that there was no violation of the previously imposed precautionary measure, as the prohibition applied to access to cryptocurrency trading platforms, while the Exodus wallet constitutes a self-custody solution," states the defense.

The legal representatives of the suspect point out the absence of a clear notice regarding the content of the decision imposed against him. This fact would eliminate the voluntary disobedience to the operational restrictions on the day of the transaction in question.

The defense accuses the court of withholding information due to the impossibility of consulting the complete digital evidence from the police.

The legal team points to the break in the chain of protection of the devices and codes inspected during the searches.

Minister Herman Benjamin denied the preliminary urgent request and kept the suspect in the penitentiary facilities.

The magistrate demanded that the case be sent for thorough analysis by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF).

The original Operation Decrypted took place in 2025 and dismantled a network of hackers specialized in cryptocurrency theft.

The gang managed to divert the sum of 2.6 million dollars from the accounts of a large U.S. company.

The financial core hacked into the foreign company's panel and transferred the illicit profit to the domain of Brazilians. Blockchain tracking confirmed the flow of capital in accounts maintained by operators from the state of Maranhão.

In March 2026, the Federal Police and the Homeland Security Investigations agency launched the second phase of the offensive.

The union of agents revealed the members' attempt to disguise the trail of the theft even after the progress of federal investigations.

Moreover, the assets incompatible with the declared income served as bait for government authorities.

The exchange of evidence between Brazil and the United States supports the proceedings in the federal sphere. Those involved in the group will face charges of fraud and criminal association in national federation courts.
