Houthi Attack on Saudi Oil Tanker, US-Saudi Joint Strikes on Iran-aligned Militias in Iraq
On July 29, the Houthi movement announced a missile attack on the Saudi oil tanker NCC Ghazal, claiming that the vessel ignored warnings and was forced to change course. A British maritime security agency reported that a tanker passing through the Red Sea heard an explosion, with no casualties reported so far. This marks at least the fourth attack on tankers since the Houthis declared a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea. Meanwhile, the Saudi Ministry of Defense stated that the Saudi military coordinated with the US Central Command to carry out precise strikes against Iran-aligned militias in Iraq suspected of launching drone attacks. The US stated that this operation was in response to over 30 drone attacks against US forces and Saudi energy facilities in the past 72 hours. Iran denied involvement in actions against Saudi targets. Analysts believe that as the Houthis expand their attacks on energy transport targets and the US-Saudi coalition strikes Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, the situation in the Middle East is escalating further, with the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz—two major energy transport routes—facing higher risks, potentially exacerbating global energy supply and oil price fluctuations.
